ARTIST STATEMENT - The Colours of Jahn Mo
Born in the Lofoten Islands, Norway, where sea meets mountain, Jahn Mo has spent a lifetime absorbing the raw, shifting beauty of the far north. Known for his contemporary abstract paintings, he draws directly from this landscape: the deep blues of the ocean, the sharp lines of the mountains, and the restless northern weather that never settles for long.
Jahn works in a studio open to that same shifting light, where the smell of paint mixes with sea air carried in through the window. His canvases are large and bold, built from the same palette as the land around him. Each brushstroke is an attempt to hold onto something fleeting: the pull of the tide, the rhythm of a wave breaking, the particular quality of light in a northern summer or the dark of winter.
His path into abstraction began with an early fascination with the Norwegian painter Jakob Weidemann, whose focus on nature, colour, and balance shaped Jahn's own approach to the canvas. That foundation has carried him through exhibitions across Norway and the United States, and toward a body of work built on colour, energy, and harmony.
Norway was never the whole story. Travels through Africa, Japan, Europe, and the United States broadened Jahn's view, and he found that the qualities he valued most at home, respect, dignity, the possibility of friendship, were everywhere, expressed differently but recognisable all the same. Those encounters now surface in his work alongside the fjords and the sea.
Each canvas is one part of a larger idea: humanity's connection to nature, and to each other. Bold strokes stand in for water, weather, and the movement of a mind at work; colours blend and collide to suggest unity within difference.
Jahn Mo continues to paint with the same purpose that started it all: rooted in the north, open to the world. His work is meant to be lived with, not just looked at: art that belongs in a home, an office, or a public space, offering a small, recurring moment of reflection. In every stroke, he aims to capture something of Norway, and something larger than it, a reminder of how connected we all are, much like the landscape that shaped him.
